Kelso struggle with their

Gretna 5

Kelso United 1

United put up a spirited display in this Image Printers Cup encounter, but were defeated by Lowland League side Gretna at a wet and windy Raydale Park.

The Tweedsiders showed good resistance, but the home side wore them down and United and were not helped when defender Darren Bowie was sent off in the second half after handling the ball on the goal line.

Gretna went in front after 10 minutes when full back Robson Halliday swung in a cross from the right and striker Joseph Slattery headed into the top corner.

Kelso’s Jack Logan shot from 35 yards, but Gretna keeper Jamie Greenall was at full stretch to tip over the bar. United held the home team at bay well until Gretna got their second goal two minutes before the break through an Adam Main volley.

The home side went further ahead just before the hour mark through Dave Wallace, before Ryan Beveridge got one back for Kelso – thanks to a deflection off defender Stephen Rudd.

Five minutes later Gretna were awarded a penalty as Bowie was adjudged to have handled on the line and was shown the red card by referee Colin Pensom. Substitute Dean Rea scored from the spot.

Gretna made it five late on when midfielder Slattery broke through and scored.
