Jody’s Easdon back in

Hawick Legion 5

Newtown 4

JOHN SLORANCE reports from Wilton Lodge Park

A penalty from substitute Jody Easdon in the closing minutes earned Legion a dramatic win in what turned out to be a nine-goal thriller.

Newtown produced the early enterprise and in the ninth minute broke the deadlock when Neil McVicar found the net with a well-struck drive that gave Chris Watson no chance.

Minutes later Newtown keeper Jason Henry denied Legion an equaliser, fingertipping an Andrew Maltman lobbed shot over the bar.

The Teries got on level terms in the 29th minute. Newtown got into a tangle at the back and the ball broke to the feet of Andrew Maltman, who beat Henry with a left-footed angled shot that sailed through a ruck of players.

Seven minutes from the interval, Hawick edged ahead. Steven Aries rattled in a shot that was blocked by Henry, but Jamie Nisbet stepped in to fire home the rebound.

And, in the 65th minute, they added to their tally. On being put through by a Luke Cooper pass, Aries surged forward and calmly placed a shot out of the reach of the Newtown keeper.

Two minutes later McVicar reduced the leeway with a spot-on finish when meeting a cross from the left.

With both sides deep in the lower half of the league and in much need of points to climb away from the relegation zone, the action continued to flow and three minutes later Steven Makepeace equalised.

After Luke Cooper had restored Legion’s lead, the astonishing purple patch of goals continued when Scott Leitch got his name on the Newtown scoresheet with a rasping drive.

Time was now running out, but more drama was to unfold. With four minutes remaining Luke Cooper was brought down in the box and referee Blaikie pointed to the spot. Substitute Easdon took the resultant penalty and put victory Legion’s way.

Making a return to the Legion ranks after a spell with Hawick Royal Albert, super sub Easdon said of his late winner: “I have been injured for a long time and haven’t played for months, and although I wasn’t on the park for that long I found it hard going.

“The only decent touch I got with the ball was the penalty. Thankfully I got that right and I was pleased to see my shot hit the back of the net.”
