Peebles Rovers 2
EoS FIRST DIVISION
MAURICE GORDON reports from Whitestone Park
ALTHOUGH Ormiston created the better scoring chances in the first half Peebles had plenty in hand over the piece to collect all three points.
The visitors were the first to pose a threat when a Graham Nisbet corner kick picked out Simon Heyes, who headed the ball just wide of the Peebles goal.
Back again came Ormiston and from a Steven Enwood cross, Jason Young sent the ball just over the crossbar with a flashing header.
Shortly afterwards, Brian McEwan set off on an electrifying run before unleashing a terrific shot which brought out a splendid two-handed diving save from Bruce Callan.
Peebles replied with a Craig Edgar free-kick attempt which was well stopped by Paul Cadger.
But it was the hosts who broke the deadlock in the 37th minute when John Leitch sent in a menacing shot and, in attempting to clear the danger, Stewart Fisher could only slice the ball over his keeper for an unfortunate own goal.
Ormiston came close to grabbing an equaliser just 60 seconds after half-time. After a neat build-up down the right, McEwan flicked the ball onto Young, who headed it just wide.
Then, at the other end, after latching onto a hefty clearance from the Peebles keeper, Allan Chalmers could only blast the ball well over the Ormiston crossbar from 20 yards.
Peebles scored a second goal after 63 minutes through substitute Fraser Henderson, who had only been on the park for a minute. Henderson saw his attempted shot blocked inside the Ormiston box, but the loose ball broke back kindly to Fraser Henderson, who drilled it past the diving Cadger.
Peebles were now holding all the aces, although a spell of pressure brought no reward.
Then in the last five minutes Callan foiled Richard Fairnie and Craig Fisher with a couple of fine saves, but it was just too little too late for Ormiston.
