Peebles Rovers finished their League Cup qualifying programme on a disappointing note when Heriot-Watt ran out convincing winners.

Peebles played quite well in the first half, but did not help themselves by presenting the students with a couple of gift goals before Heriot-Watt went on to dominate the second period.

Peebles made a bright start to the game as after a neat Rovers build-up down the left, Nicky Cairns was narrowly off target with a blistering shot from 25 yards.

But Heriot-Watt opened the scoring after nine minutes. A hefty clearance from University keeper Craig Saunders reached Sean Muhsin who had the simple task of stroking the loose ball into a vacant Rovers net from 12 yards.

Peebles came close to grabbing an equaliser as Craig Edgar seemed almost certain to score with a terrific shot from 20 yards until Saunders brilliantly tipped the ball around his right-hand post.

Heriot-Watt added a second goal after 24 minutes when Muhsin coolly drilled a low shot under the diving John Falconer from 16 yards.

The students scored a third goal after 35 minutes when the Peebles keeper fumbled a Brendan Napier shot from 25 yards, and alert Ewan Watson calmly tapped the loose ball home from close range.

Heriot-Watt scored their fourth just three minutes after the interval when Watson neatly threaded the ball through to Simon Ferrie who gave Falconer no chance with a cracking shot from 12 yards.

Peebles’s bad day was made worse as Ronald Fleming was sent off in the 51st minute after picking up a second yellow card for showing dissent.

Heriot-Watt went nap in the 58th minute when, after some good leading-up work from Ronald Napier and Michael Heraghty down the right, Falconer could only parry a Muhsin shot to Ewan Watson before he headed the ball home from close range.

Ronald Napier struck the Peebles crossbar with a shot on the volley from close in when it almost seemed easier to score, but he finally netted in the 80th minute when, from a Heraghty corner-kick on the right, the striker scored with a spectacular scissors-kick from close in.
