After extra time
The newly-formed Melrose AFC may have fallen short in their hunt for promotion in their first season with a string of poor results in their Border Amateur Division C league campaign.
But, they were more than up to the challenge in front of them when A league side Gala Fairydean Rovers Amateurs travelled the short distance to Tweedbank in the quarter-final of the Waddell Cup on Saturday. Goals from Michael McAuley (2) and William Mercer matched those of Rovers trio McDonald, Hardie and Harkness to take the game to extra time.
It was the home team who showed more desire and went ahead one last time with five minutes remaining when in-form striker Mercer bagged his 28th goal of the season,
Melrose manager Graham Godsell thanked Gala Fairydean Rovers for a great game and his own squad for giving a 100 per cent performance.
