Hawick Waverley were the first to do the business in this relegation battle when opening the scoring in the 14th minute.

Latching on to a loose ball in midfield Greg Ford found the net with a lobbed shot that sailed over the head of Chirnside keeper Martin Todd.

After Todd had denied the home men a second in pulling off a fine save from Ford, Chirnside began to make their presence felt and in the 27th minute grabbed an equaliser. Robert Armstrong swung a free kick into a crowded goalmouth. Waverley failed to clear the danger and the ball broke to the feet of Joe Condy who fired home.

Boosted by this, Chirnside began to gain the upper hand and following a piercing run, Alan Jess drove a shot against the foot of the post.

The Berwickshire side continued to push forward and after a few scoring chances had went a begging, took the lead with seconds of the first half remaining by courtesy of an own goal. Ross Cairns emerging the culprit in beating keeper Kerr Brown with a header when attempting to clear an Armstrong free kick.

Chirnside began the second half strongly and Brown put up the shutters when tipping a net bound Steven Christie effort over the bar.

Two minutes past the hour mark United went further ahead. Armstrong doing the scoring with a perfectly taken penalty.

In the 73rd minute, Waverley fell further behind. Armstrong threaded a pass into the path of Steven Shennan who produced a spot on finish in drilling a shot out of the reach of Brown.

With seven minutes remaining Waverley reduced the leeway when substitute Darren Munro stuck away a Peter Gellaitry cut back.
