Fairies believe in themselves enough to win 11-goal thriller

Eyemouth United 5

Gala Fairydean 6

JOHN CLAYTON reports from Warner Park

BOTH sides were fully aware that this match was being played on Guy Fawkes day and served up a match full of fireworks that should have been visible back in Galashiels.

Gala took an early lead when Jay Wilson picked up the ball close to the touchline, cut inside and unleashed a stunning 25yd right-foot shot that flew into the top corner of the goal.

Then Eyemouth’s Ross Aitchison strolled through the Gala defence, evading several half-hearted challenges before sliding home the equaliser.

The Fairies retook the lead when Craig Livingstone controlled the ball in the box and laid it back to Alan Jackson, whose shot was blocked, but the ball spun sideways to the unmarked Aaron Brunton, who slotted the rebound.

Then, following treatment for a head knock, Paul Young burst into the right side of the Eyemouth area and unleashed an unstoppable cross-shot which the Eyemouth keeper could only admire as it flashed across his field of vision and into the net.

However, Eyemouth soon reduced the arrears when a Richard Baxendale free kick took a deflection off the Gala wall and wrong-footed Elliot Turnbull to drag Eyemouth back into the match.

The two-goal cushion was soon restored when Livingstone picked up a long ball out wide and beat two defenders before beating Mike Gall in the home goal.

Eyemouth continued to press and always looked dangerous from corners and set pieces and it was from a corner that a point blank shot cannoned off Turnbull and hit Andrew Brown on the arm as he stood next to the left post.

Brown received a straight red card and Jonathan Simpson took the penalty that struck Turnbull’s legs and went into the roof of the net. Worse was to follow for the Fairydean when Eyemouth drew level from a far-post cross that Aitchison headed powerfully home.

Ten-man Gala continued to attack whenever possible and Gerri Rossi and Livingstone combined well to set up Aaron Brunton, who beat Gall at the foot of the post to put Gala in front once again.

Typically, Eyemouth drew level once more from a far-post corner which was headed across the goal and Jonathan Simpson was on hand to force home the equaliser.

In injury time, Fairydean were awarded a free kick close to the left corner of the box and Livingstone got the ball up over the wall to beat Gall in the top left-hand corner for the win.
