Cup combat awaits Borders squads

Having lost two of the season’s opening games, Peebles Rovers are keen to make an impact soon in their East of Scotland League campaign.

Under the guidance of new manager Geri Rossi, the Whitestone Park men were unfortunate to go down 3-2 in their last outing, however, beaten by a last-minute goal from Eyemouth United, just when a draw looked on the cards.

On Hibs’ books as a youngster, Rossi played for Peebles and also had spells with Gala Fairydean Rovers and Spartans before becoming Rovers’ team boss.

Rovers, who have several new faces in their squad, including up-and-coming youngsters Ben McGinley, Michael Cockburn and Saul SchulzKeith, as well as experienced pair Colin Smith and Alan McMath, find themselves in cup action on Saturday.

They travel to Edinburgh to meet Civil Service Strollers in the Football Nation Qualifying Cup competition.

From the Lowland League, Gala Fairydean Rovers and Vale of Leithen are also involved in the same contest.

Gala face Spartans at Ainslie Park, while the Vale are at home to Heriot Watt University.

Hawick Royal Albert are without ‘keeper Kyle Rankin for their away Lowland League clash with BSC Glasgow.

Selkirk, heavily beaten last time out at East Kilbride, entertain Cumbernauld Colts at Yarrow Park.
