Callan saves the day

Berwick Rangers Reserves 0

Peebles Rovers 1

MAURICE GORDON reports from Shielfield Park

VISITING keeper Bruce Callan pulled off the save of the match late on in the second half to ensure that the Rovers collected all three points.

Both sides created several scoring chances in a competitive but scoreless first half, with Peebles’ best efforts coming from Michael Holness, Jamie Innes and Keith Harper, while at the other end, Johnathan Brown went close with a 20-yard volley before Elliot Black cleared a Ryan Sommerville shot off the line.

Peebles broke the deadlock two minutes after half-time. After making an electrifying run down the right, Holness slipped the ball across to Fraser Henderson. He neatly chipped through to Craig Edgar, who went racing into the Berwick box and let loose. Connor Wood parried the shot, but the ball broke kindly into Edgar’s path and he fired home.

After Innes came close to scoring from a corner, Holness went within inches of bagging the goal of the season just before the hour mark after beating three defenders in a menacing run into the box.

In turn Berwick came close to grabbing an equaliser with 19 minutes remaining – Callan brilliantly tipping Ross Cowan’s shot around his right-hand post at full stretch.

Play continued to rage from end to end with few goalmouth incidents, before Berwick’s Jason Darling was sent off two minutes into injury-time after picking up a second yellow card.
