The Awards, which have GB Technologies as their headline sponsor, recognise and reward the individuals, teams and events that are helping to drive forward sporting excellence and participation across the region.

The winners of three of the eight categories - Sports Personality of the Year, Team of the Year and Inspirational Performance - are chosen via a public poll and the votes are now being counted and verified ahead of the announcement of the winners at a glittering awards ceremony, which will take place at Peebles Hydro tomorrow evening.

Over 230 guests are expected to attend the event, which will see prizes presented in the following categories: Event of the Year (sponsored by Murray and Burrell), Sports Personality of the Year (sponsored by GB Technologies), Team of the Year (sponsored by Borders Embroideries), Inspirational Performance (sponsored by Artisan PR), Disability Sports Award (sponsored by Borders.co.uk), Service to Sport, World Class Achievement and Positive Coaching Scotland.

The names of the latest sporting heroes joining the Scottish Borders Hall of Fame will also be unveiled on the night. Established in 2005, the Hall of Fame celebrates the sporting achievements of Borderers who have contributed to the legacy of sport in the region.

Ewan Jackson, Chief Executive, Borders Sport and Leisure, said; “These Awards have really caught the imagination of the Borders public.

“Our polls have seen over 1100 votes cast with people even calling our headquarters asking for ballot papers so they can cast a vote. We’re delighted with the response and believe it will be exceptionally encouraging for all of the region’s athletes and coaches.

“Participating in sport at any level is important so many ways, from the obvious benefits to health and fitness to the social interaction it encourages.

“We have a huge amount of sporting talent here in the Borders so we’re greatly looking forward to rewarding the stars who are flying the flag for sport in the region and helping to inspire others to participate.”

Sally Burrell from Murray and Burrell, sponsors of the Event of the Year category, said; “At Murray and Burrell, we’re in the business of delivering excellence every day – something all of the sportsmen and women being honoured through these awards will be familiar with.

“We’re delighted to be sponsoring the Event of the Year at an event that holds such prestige in its own right and we hope that our support will encourage recognition for all of those involved in running and participating in sporting events across the region.”
