Scunthorpe and the nationalist debate

I would like to help John Donaldson (letters, February 9) in his understanding of the issues behind Scottish independence.

It is better to use official figures from the Westminster government than the pages of the Scunthorpe Telegraph, which show that Scotland is in fact in surplus with more going to London than we get back even with the Barnet formula.

Since oil was found off the coast of Scotland Tory and Labour governments have lied about the extent of the reserves then hidden the truth of the McCrone report for 30 years.

I firmly believe that Scotland’s future will be better served by a parliament with full powers in Edinburgh than one in London who are mainly concerned about south-east England, which is the most subsidised part of the UK.
