Council acts at last on Bert’s Shop

I was glad to hear that Scottish Borders Council has been given permission to make a compulsory purchase of the old building in Jedburgh known locally as “Bert’s Shop”.

They have the power as well as the responsibility to do something. It has to be said that the strong scaffolding around the 18th century house is an example of practical craftmanship rather than beauty.

Nevertheless the C-listed building is part of a conservation area and deserves to be protected by law.

I would like to make a plea that rebuilding should include conservation at very least of the High Street facade. It shouldn’t be necessary to look too far to find an experienced building firm capable of undertaking the skilled work.
