Background reports have been ordered on a shoplifter prior to sentencing.
Emma Elliot, 28, formerly of Hawick, pleaded guilty to stealing two handbags and a coat from TK Maxx’s Galashiels store last Wednesday.
Procurator fiscal Graham Fraser told Selkirk Sheriff Court the value of the stolen items amounted to £425, explaining: “One of the handbags was valued at £300.
“She was seen in the premises and set off the alarm as she left.”
Elliot was later stopped by police, and a search of her new address in Forest Avenue, Galashiels, led to the recovery of the stolen items.
Defence lawyer Ross Dow said his client owed money to a drug-dealer, and that was why she had resorted to shoplifting.
Sheriff Peter Paterson called for background reports to be prepared for her next hearing on May 8, but he added that he had little confidence in Elliot abstaining from drugs until then, so he remanded her in custody.
