Woman, 86, mugged in broad daylight in Selkirk

The crime happened in broad daylight on Friday afternoon and police have appealed for help in tracking down the youth responsible.

The 86-year-old was walking alone at the junction of Curror Street and Bleachfield Road around 2pm.

Police Scotland say she was approached by a young male who snatched her purse, which she was carrying in her hand.

The pensioner was left stunned, but unhurt.

Following the theft the youth was spotted running along Curror Street where he disappeared from view.

Police were alerted and launched a search and an investigation.

Inspector Bryan Burns is in charge of the case.

He commented: “The elderly lady was thankfully uninjured, but clearly shaken by this incident.”

The woman was able to give officers a description of the mugger.

Police say he was white and aged between 15 and 18 years.

He’s described as slim with short, black hair.

And police say he was wearing a long-sleeved orange top.

Inspector Burns said: “I am appealing to anyone who was within that area of Selkirk on Friday afternoon, or who remembers seeing someone fitting the description of the suspect, to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”

And he added: “In addition, I would urge anyone with further information relevant to this investigation to contact police immediately.”

Local officers are continuing with their enquiries into last Friday’s mugging.
