A Bathgate firm has won the contract to alter and upgrade the Waverley Residential Home at Elm Row in Galashiels.

Scottish Borders Council has accepted a tender of £836,471 from Ashwood Scotland Ltd for the renovation, which will see the existing 24 bedrooms replaced with 15 bedrooms, each with ensuite toilets and showers.

The contract notice, published on Friday, reveals that the West Lothian construction company was one of five bidders for the work.

It marks a major change in the operation of the facility, which is switching from the provision of long-term care to short stay and respite care.

Waverley is one of six residential homes in the Borders which is now run by SB Cares, the arms-length company set up a year ago by the council to run all adult care services in the region.
