Weather warning for snow in Borders extended by 12 hours

That Met Office warning, urging Borderers to be aware of adverse weather conditions, was originally only for today, February 10, and until noon tomorrow, but it has now been extended by 12 hours.

A yellow warning also remains in force for high winds.

A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson said: “Following heavy rain and flooding overnight Saturday into Sunday, a weather warning for snow and wind is in place covering the whole of Monday and Tuesday.

“The yellow weather warning is valid to midnight on Tuesday, with up to 10cm of snow possible over 300m.

“This covers almost entirely the whole of the Borders.

“Whilst accumulations at low levels may only be temporary, strong winds will lead to blizzard conditions at times, as well as drifting snow.

“There may be local accumulations over higher ground of up to 20cm.”

A Met Office spokesperson added: “Frequent and heavy snow showers will affect the region throughout Monday and Tuesday.

“Snow showers will occur especially over high ground, giving slight accumulations of 1cm to 3cm above 150m and 5cm to 10cm above 300m.

“Snow will gradually build up and in a few locations, and accumulations of over 20cm are possible by Tuesday evening over the highest routes in Scotland.

“The height of snow levels will vary throughout the period, but it is likely that any snow accumulations at low levels will only be temporary.

Strong winds, gusting at 50-60 mph, will lead to blizzard conditions at times and considerable drifting of lying snow over high ground.

“Icy surfaces are likely to occur, more especially on Monday night into Tuesday morning.

“Frequent lightning strikes are also possible, perhaps leading to interruptions to power supplies.”
