Snow warning for Scottish Borders

While we have barely got used to the idea of autumn, given the recent unseasonally warm weather, it appears winter is well on its way.

With temperatures dropping rapidly over the past few days, the rain which hit the area on Sunday is expected to turn to snow in places later on Tuesday and into Wednesday morning.

Kevin Sewell, Scottish Borders Council’s assistant emergency planning officer, said: “As ever with such forecasts, small temperature changes will affect what we may see in terms of rain, sleet or snow, however, I would encourage those who live and work in the western Scottish Borders in particular to be prepared for some potentially difficult driving conditions from late on Tuesday afternoon and throughout the evening.

“We will monitor the forecast carefully over the coming 24 hours and issue further advice if required.

“However, we would encourage all Borderers to sign up to the free SB Alert messaging service to ensure that they are kept fully updated on winter weather.”

The Met Office released a statement which said: “This could bring accumulations of 4-8 cm across some hilly areas of northern England and Scotland, largely above 200-300m, with as much as 15cm possible above 300-400m.

“Overnight Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, the snow should peter out over Scotland.

“Please be aware of the risk of difficult driving conditions in some areas.”
