Borders residents are being warned to watch out for scam emails, which claim to be from HM Revenue and Customs, advising of a refund of council tax.
The alert was issues after Scottish Borders Council received a report of a Peebles resident receiving such an email.
However, a council spokesperson said: “HM Revenue and Customs do not deal with council tax payments and are therefore not in a position to repay council tax.
“If you receive such an email, please disregard it.”
Council tax refunds are dealt with by Scottish Borders Council customer services staff, who should be contacted with any queries regarding balances or refunds due.
Anyone who has received an email or call that they are concerned about should contact the council on 0300 100 1800.
Residents should be extremely wary of unsolicited emails and phone calls and if in any doubt, should not give out personal details or click on associated links.
