But the main point of the evening is to allow people to view proposals put together by urban design specialist Allan Swan of Bain-Swan Architects in Eyemouth. They will be able to discuss the plans with community councillors and encouraged to give their own views.

Community council chairman George Luke commented: “This will be the first chance for most people in Newtown to discuss the proposed new village centre. What we have from SBC is only a draft proposal, but we hope people will come and tell us what they like and don’t like. Folk should consider whether the proposals include the features they believe are most important.”

Mr Luke went on: “When the community council responds to SBC, we need to know that we are representing the views of Newtown residents. This is an important step in planning for the future of our village and I would strongly encourage everyone to attend.”

Council secretary Raymond du Bois stressed: “There are lots of issues people might want to raise. For example, with all the cutbacks, people may be worried about the future of the Community Wing and Community Centre, street cleaning, maintenance of the sports field, grass cutting and clearing weeds.

“On a more positive note, we will be happy to talk about the Floral Gateway competition, the suggested summer fete or sports day and other ideas people might have for making Newtown a place where we can all be really proud to live.”

The open evening takes place in the Community Wing Tuesday and people can come along at any time between 6pm and 9pm to look at the plans and talk to community councillors.
