VETERAN gunner Bob Thomson,87, was presented with the Arctic Convoy Medal at the weekend by The Hon. Gerald Maitland-Carew, Lord Lieutenant of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale, for his services some 65 years ago.

Mr Thomson, who is originally from Lauderdale but now lives in Innerleithen, served as a Gunner with the Royal Navy on the Aircraft Carrier HMS Premier, from 1943 to 1946.

Captain Gerald Maitland-Carew said: “I am delighted to have presented Mr Thomson with this medal. Many believe that this medal is long overdue in being awarded to those who suffered in those harshest of conditions. Mr Thomson can wear this medal with great pride.”
