UPDATE: Galashiels barber thanks public for donations, and issues plea for toiletries

Galashiels barber Luigi Caterino has thanked the public for donations of warm clothing, which he will hand over to Edinburgh’s homeless people on Sunday.

Luigi Caterino, along with employees Lucy Martin and Rachel Casson, are heading up to Edinburgh on Sunday to offer haircuts and donated warm clothing to the homeless in the capital.

Yesterday, we told how Luigi and his Italian Job Barbershop employees Lucy Martin and Rachel Casson had teamed up with Edinburgh homeless organisation Streetwork to provide a haircut, beard trim and warm clothing to those who don’t have a home to go to this Christmas.

And he’s been touched by the amount of clothing which has been dropped into his shop this morning, but has issued a further plea for toiletries.

He said: “This morning we are so happy to recive so many donations of clothing, scarves and hats.

“We are also desperate to take with us a supply of toothbrushes, toothpaste, antiperspirants, shower gels, shampoo and soap.

“It doesn’t have to be expensive items, you can buy them in Home Bargains or Poundland.

“We will be trying our best to give each of them a Christmas gift.

“Thank you so much for your help.”

Yesterday, Luigi explained why he was doing this.

He said: “This year for Christmas I wanted to do something special that made me feel better within myself.

“I could have a holiday, a trip to Italy or Europe, or buy a new phone, but myself and my staff decided to do something really special.

“On December 22, my staff and I will be in Edinburgh, together with Streetwork, to cut hair and beards for our homeless friends that are around, and try to give them a better Christmas.

“Please support us with small donations ... we don’t want money, but scarves, socks, hats etc so that many of them will have a warm Christmas.

“Any donations will be accepted at the shop where we have a box set up.”

Find out how they got on in next week’s Southern Reporter.
