Kelso have won their second Borders Chess League title in three years.
Turning point of the season came in the match at Berwick when the visitors overcame the seasiders by 3½-1½. In their final encounter last week, the Tweedsiders needed just a point at home to Selkirk – but hard-fought wins from Keith Aitchison, John Woodhurst, Martin Keen and Alan Armstrong secured Kelso’s biggest victory of the campaign – 4-1.
Kelso remained unbeaten throughout the season campaign, conceding just one draw at home to Berwick, who finished runners-up, followed by Galashiels and Selkirk.
For anyone looking to form a club, there’s plenty of time to apply to join the league next season – just contact Alan Armstrong (evenings) on 01896 752918.
