An appeal for witnesses has been launched after police constable Mark Murtagh, 44, was killed when his motorcycle and a bus were involved in a collision on the A6105 near Earlston. He was riding from his home in Greenlaw to start duty at Galashiels police station on Friday.

He leaves behind wife Jennifer and son Fergus. In a statement his family said: “Mark was a caring and loving husband, a devoted father and he will be greatly missed.”

Divisional commander Gillian Imery said: “Our sympathies are with his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.”

The PC was given a meritorious award after he helped arrest a knife-wielding man who had taken a woman hostage in Broxburn in 2010.
