‘No pattern’ to Dirt Pot crashes

A SENIOR councillor has confirmed that there is no pattern to road crashes at Dirt Pot Corner on the A72.

A 49-year-old man died in August when his motorbike and a car collided on the corner. A major scheme to remove the corner has been shelved by Scottish Borders Council and Councillor Gavin Logan has suggested an advisory speed limit – such as between Caddonfoot and Clovenfords – should be put in place.

But he’s been told by the councillor responsible for roads and infrastructure Jim Fullerton: “It is important to recognise that the [fatal] accident has not been attributed to road engineering and that although there have been other accidents at the general locus over the years, there is no particular common pattern to them.”

And he said the possibility of advisory speed limits would be considered as part of an ongoing exercise, but said they were not normally used at isolated locations.
