Motorists are being urged to adhere to new 20mph speed limits introduced across the region this week - despite the challenge of curbing speeds in some locations.

The new trial across all our villages and towns aims to make it easier and safer for people to walk, cycle and wheel during the ongoing pandemic and feedback on its success will be sought next year.

Hawick and Denholm councillor Stuart Marshall has asked motorists to obey the new rules, but acknowledged it may prove a challenge.

He said: “I think we must do all that we can to make our roads and neighbourhoods safer but I’ve already had concerns from motorists that in some places in the town with steep hills, such as Wilton Path, it may be more challenging to adhere to 20mph.

“We must remember that this is a pilot scheme and is very much open to be tweaked or changed in the future and therefore it’s of great importance that both motorists and the public alike take time to make their views known to Scottish Borders Council on what they like or dislike about the scheme.

“These views will form part of the final analysis.”
