Town gets peek at Fringe show

Described as “a light-hearted romp through a key phase in Scotland’s historical identity”, the piece was first performed to much critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2013 to mark the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Flodden.

The show has now been revived and will return to the capital for a two-week run at Spotlites (venue 278) in George Street, from August 14-28 at 7.30pm.

“We had great fun performing it last time and we were keen to fine-tune it and give it another run,” explained Nichol, who wrote and stars in the play.

“It recounts the life of King James IV of Scotland and charts events leading up to the calamitous defeat at the hands of the English.

“It’s a history lesson of sorts, but with an alternative and daft approach. I tell the story, switching hats – literally – to play a cast of 10 key characters.

“There are plenty of laughs and a good selection of sing-a- long songs.”

Nicol will be joined on stage by Ideoms musicians Jenni Borthwick, Hilary Bell and Carly Blain, with Rob Duff and Toby Ross providing the offstage voices.

Next Friday’s preview show in Selkirk begins at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 from the venue.
