Time's almost up for Selkirk's courthouse scaffolding

Scaffolding which has surrounded the town's main civic building should be removed next week as the deadline for refurbishments looms tomorrow.

Walter Scott’s Courthouse in Market Place welcomed back the first of its refurbished clock faces on Monday, signalling the near-completion of the £431,000 improvement works.

The building has been under wraps since September to allow for repairs to its steeple, weathervane, clock and stonework as part of the £1m conservation area regeneration scheme. And, assuming today’s inspection goes to plan and the works are completed by tomorrow’s deadline, that scaffold will finally be removed next week.

Selkirkshire council Gordon Edgar, said: “We are quite confident it will be completed on time.

“The clock faces have been refurbished and brought up to a modern standard to meet health and safety guidelines.

“All four faces have been done and the clock itself has had a service and the mechanics are all looking good.

“I’m really pleased to see them back up.

“Next week, the scaffolding will be coming down and the streetscape workers will be back to finish the slabs in front of the clock, with the whole streetscape project due to be finished by the end of September, hopefully.”

The works have been co-ordinated as part of the £450,000 Selkirk streetscape scheme which began last August.

They will safeguard the courthouse for years to come.
