Following his death, tributes were paid to Mr Johnston, who played for his village football side Earlston Rhymers.

Rhymers manager Lee Manderson said at the time: “He was a cracking lad and it is a sad loss for all his pals and everyone in Earlston.”

And former Earlston boss Aidan Hume added: “Scott had a great attitude to the game and took instructions well.

“He was a joy to work with and never complained, which is very rare these days in amateur football.”

A service in January for Mr Johnston, an apprentice agricultural engineer, saw around 600 mourners pack into Earlston Parish Church to pay their respects.
