Syrian families arrive in Borders

Two Syrian refugee families have arrived in the Borders this week.

It follows Scottish Borders Council’s decision in November to contribute to the UK government’s resettlement scheme.

The families have been housed in Galashiels, and the council is keen for them to be given the time and space to settle.

A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson said: “The council agreed last year to commit to the resettlement of 10 Syrian refugee families in the Borders over the next four years.

“Since this decision, the council and a range of partner organisations including the voluntary sector have been working together to ensure that the first two families to arrive in the region are properly settled and supported.

“Two families have now been resettled in the Borders. We will continue to support the refugee families going forward and prepare for the next families to arrive.”
