spreading the word

It was a bit of a give-away when Jedburgh Grammar School modern studies teacher Nancy McNicol held a special event for some of her pupils. She had received 48 copies of Rohinton Mistry’s A Fine Balance as part of World Book Night, during which a million books were given away. Nancy’s classes deal with Africa rather than Asia but she thought the book, which is set in India, gave a valuable insight into subjects they covered, such as racism and corruption

A few of the books went to colleagues, but Nancy gave 40-plus to students. “I didn’t even need one myself – I had bought a copy at the school’s book fair last year,” she said.
