Sounding Brass for Selkirk

SELKIRK’S Victoria Halls will host the first full concert by the Scottish Borders Youth Brass Band in the region.

Drawing the cream of young brass and percussion players from the whole of the Borders and Langholm, the band was formed only two years ago. It has already tasted contest success, being crowned Scottish Champions in 2010 and 2011.

Organised by the Scottish Borders Brass Band Association, the show will be conducted by the band’s musical director, Alan Fernie, who is the association’s chairman.

He said: “We are very proud of our youth band and we thought that it was about time that the public at large got a taste of the tremendous musical talent that we have here in the Borders.

“The association is planning a special programme for the concert, which will have something for everyone. We hope to be able to raise some funds on the night to help transport the players to the next Scottish Youth Championships, planned for Perth in November.”

The event gets under way at 7.30pm on Saturday, May 12 and tickets are available for £5 by phoning Alan Fernie on 01750 725213 or by post to Nicola Douglas, 23 Bleachfield Road, Selkirk, TD7 4HQ – enclose a stamped addressed envelope and a cheque payable to SBBBA.
