Short hails '˜great news' on Aldi's Hawick bid

Hawick Community Council chair Marion Short has welcomed the news that an Aldi store will be built in Commercial Road.

Today Scottish Borders Council’s planning review body granted permission for the 18,500 sq ft supermarket – the crunch decision being made following an appeal by the developer, Wilton Mills Ltd, after the initial bid was knocked back by SBC in December.

Mrs Short told us: “It’s great news for the town and hopefully will bring a much-needed boost to Hawick.

“At long last common sense has prevailed and the councillors on the [planning review] committee overturned the previous decision.

“Let’s hope the next stages go smoothly and we can get rid of that eyesore in Commercial Road sooner rather than later.”

The German supermarket giant says its Hawick branch will create 35 jobs.
