Selkirk dump to take working electricals to give to the needy

Scottish Borders Council (SBC) and charity Home Basics have teamed up to open the region’s first Reuse Cabin at Selkirk Community Recycling Centre.

From Monday, October 13, the cabin will accept donated electrical items that are in working condition. Home Basics will then collect the products and put the items through a thorough quality check before being made available to the most in need people in the region.

Any items that are not in working order can continue to be recycled at the Borders’ six community recycling centres but not in the Reuse Cabin at Selkirk.

SBC’s executive member for environmental services, Councillor David Paterson, said: “I am very pleased that the Reuse Cabin has opened in Selkirk. If this proves to be a success, SBC will look to extend the reuse initiative to other recycling centres.”

Home Basics business manager Dennis Fisher added: “I hope the people of the Borders will give generously to support this scheme. It is a great opportunity.”
