The Selkirk committee of Cancer Research UK have planned a busy year of events throughout 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of its formation in 1966.
The schedule has been designed to appeal to different age groups and a variety of interest groups.
There is something for everyone and it is hoped that these events will not only appeal to its traditional supporters but also attract some new faces as well.
We all know that the benefits that research into cancer has had on the lives of thousands of people over the last few decades.
The Selkirk committee are proud to have played a very small part in that progress and with an eye to the future are committed to continue that momentum.
Several supporters have already held small scale events in their homes and these are a great way of catching up with friends and raising much needed funds for more research. It is hoped that more of these fund-raisers will continue throughout the year.
The next big event will be the Golden Anniversary Celebration with the Border Boogie Band in Victoria Hall on Saturday 19th March.
There are still some tickets left which can be purchased at Rodgersons Newsagent 01750 20749. A good night is guaranteed!
To mark the queen’s 90th birthday (April 21stt) Margery Inglis will make and sell slices of her special cake from the Tower St Pop up Shop on Monday 18 April. Joyce Wright’s fund-raising hill walk (approx 20 miles) from Dryhope to Selkirk via Traquair, takes place on April 24.
On a date to be confirmed in June, the charity is holding another fund fundraiser called ‘A Day Out Of Selkirk…The Bus Pass Challenge’.
The challenge is to travel as many miles as possible in one day using just a bus pass. A prize will go to the pair of travellers who travel most miles
There are more events planned for autumn.
