Seascapes win watercolour award for David Cass

STOW artist David Cass has picked up another leading award.

Cass, 23, scooped the Royal Watercolour Society main prize in front of 843 other entrants for his framed set of 12 matchbox seascapes.

Cass said: “I collected these matchboxes whilst living in Brussels in the first half of last year, and I’ve gradually been painting on and in them since my return, adding to a growing body of found object based ‘hybrid’ artworks, that belong between painting and sculpture.”

As well as the award and a cash prize, his work was featured in an exhibition at the Bankside Gallery in London.

It is David’s second showcase in London in the last six months, after he won first place in the Royal Society of Marine Artists Young Artist Competition in October. Last month he had a piece included in the annual Visual Arts Scotland showcase in Edinburgh. Details of past and future exhibitions by David can be seen at
