At this month’s meeting of the Midlem WI, Edith Scott gave an interesting insight into Rotary International and the Selkirk club, showing some of the community work the club carries out, through monetary donations and man hours.
Youth opportunities are high in the club’s activities, with various youth projects carried out each year, including the recent young musician competition when local vocalist Milly Coltherd made her way through to the district finals in Edinburgh, finishing a very creditable third place.
Edith told of the club’s impending visit to the Philippines next February, when some of the members will help refurbish the girls dormitory at a local orphanage.
The competition winners were as follows – hand puppet in any craft: 1, Sheena Galloway; 2, Helen Pierce; 3, Dilys Wheelans.
Coconut rocks: 1, Sheena Combe ; 2, Margot Hastie; 3, Margaret Rutter.
Next month, Lynne Robertson will do a floral art demonstration.
The competitions will be for a handmade box and a painted stone.
