A flamboyant, cross-dressing DJ called Jon Pleased Wimmin will help relaunch Gala’s new Rendition night next week.

Colin Shillinglaw and Derrick Sewell, who have both been DJ-ing for over 20 years, are re-launching their big night Rendition on Saturday, March 22, at Reivers bar in Galashiels, with their DJ star guest presenting “upfront house music for mind, body and soul,” Colin said.

“Rendition was created by two like-minded friends who wanted to play their extensive record collection to a wider audience,” he writes, and Jon Pleased Wimmin’s “eclectic taste and encyclopaedic knowledge of pop and dance music make him the perfect candidate for any party that needs his distinctive injection of oomph.”

Jon Cooper, pictured, AKA Jon Pleased Wimmin, is a UK DJ originally hailing from London, who rose to fame in the club world during the 1990s, with his his flamboyant cross dressing and stylish presence.

After cutting his teeth as a clubber at seminal late 80s London clubs such as Taboo, Sacrosanct and the Mud Club, Jon’s career on the other side of the decks started in 1991.

His three-piece cabaret act, The Pleased Wimmin, were an extraordinary sight, at once Ultra Glam, but Streetwise too, never falling into the clichéd idea of traditional female impersonators.

Their approachability and disarming wit set them apart ... along with their high-octane cackles and high energy presence.

Jon’s highly stylised dress sense (he is a former fashion student) and his skill at mixing an eclectic selection of tunes garnered praise all round and throughout the 1990s he was a regular fixture in DJ Magazine’s top 20 best DJs in the world, coming fifth in 1996.

In 2001 he moved from London to Edinburgh to concentrate on studio work, and he graduated from Napier University in 2007 with a First Class Honours Degree (BA) in popular music – composition and production.

Jon still guests all over Europe, playing current and classic sets and has played alongside the cream of the DJ world, including Pete Tong, Freemasons, Mark Ronson, Seamus Haji, 2ManyDJs, Jacques Lu Cont, Danny Tenaglia, Sasha, Carl Cox, Smokin’ Jo, Andrew Weatherall, Boy George, Sister Bliss and Erol Alkan.

Within the last year, Jon has played at a whole host of exciting gigs, such as Boy George’s Alternative Pride party at Area in London.

Tickets for the ticket-only-event cost £10, available from LA Beaute or Reivers Bar in Galashiels.

Doors open 7.30pm-1am. There’s more info on their Facebook page – Rendition-House music.
