Racing pigeons to raise cash for charities

The Great Rotary Pigeon Race came to a head at Peebles Agricultural Show on Saturday when six of Lawrie Rayburn’s homing pigeons were released 122 miles away in Thirsk, Yorkshire.

Peebles Rotarians have been busy during the last few weeks raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and Rotary charities by asking local residents to guess which bird would arrive home first and how long it would take. Funds were also raised from local businesses who each sponsored one of the birds.

Top prize for the correct guess was won by Mr W. Watt of Roslin who predicted that Tontine Tornado, sponsored by The Tontine Hotel in Peebles, would be first home in a time of 9 hours, 44 minutes and 30 seconds.

A fantastic £1,407 has been raised from the Great Rotary Pigeon Race – £1,267 will be donated to Macmillan and £140 to Rotary charities.
