Selkirk High School have been taking part in a very unusual interdisciplinary project The Selkirk Bannock Bake Off.

The project involved all of the 2nd year pupils working across both home economics and technical.

Competing in groups, the pupils worked through the stages of product development to reinvent the Selkirk Bannock.

They were given the basic ingredients then had to add their own ideas to give a modern twist to a traditional recipe.

The winning group from each of the four classes then had to compete in the final ‘head to head bake off’ on the 10th March to find the overall Star Bakers.

The judges were Irene Logan from the Courthouse Coffee Shop, Selkirk and Rob Robson from Hunters the Bakers in Hawick.

The winning ‘Star Bakers’ were Demi Grahame and Jacqui Wright with their ‘Triple Fruit Explosion’ Bannock.

Hunters the Bakers will bake the winning bannock, which will be sold at the 2nd year parent’s night in April.

In technical, the pupils had to design packaging for their particular bannock.

The eye-catching packaging had to include the ingredients list and other labelling information and also gave the pupils the opportunity to use the new computerised laser cutter using Abobe Illustrator. The winning pupils will be visiting the bakers to see their winning recipe being made.

The school was supported by Hunters the Bakers in Hawick, Loch Carron and Grieves in Selkirk, who supplied bannocks for the pupils to taste.
