I am not surprised that there is growing criticism of free prescriptions.
Why the SNP Government adopted a policy found to be unsustainable during the Forties is beyond comprehension. Originally, the cost became prohibitive and the abuse widespread.
My sister worked in Fife at the time and she found it not uncommon to see sets of false teeth on the mantelpiece. The gums of the owners were too hard to wear dentures with comfort, but it was their “right” to have them.
Then charges were brought in, with certain groups exempted, when the sensible solution would have been for everybody to pay a small fee.
I believe that would still be the most sensible option.
