IN PICTURES: Hundreds enjoy Hawick & District Railway Society exhibition at Auld Baths

Hawick and District Railway Society’s annual exhibition of model railways and train memorabilia, held at the town’s Auld Baths, was a runaway success, with 750 people taking in this year’s display on Saturday and Sunday.

A cardboard model depicting the town’s former railway station and a section of the old Waverley Route, made 40 years ago by society member Robin Deas, was the main attraction at the Hawick stand, with a colouring competition also being held.

Representatives of visiting societies brought model railways too, with 12 working layouts on display, as well as model boats and modelling demonstrations.

Society committee member Ian Bell said: “We had a good turnout, with people coming from all over the Borders. Many people that were on holiday in the area came too. They had seen the roadside signs and followed those across to Hawick.”

An exhibition celebrating 50 years of Hawick and District Railway Society is set to open this weekend, so toy train enthusiasts won’t have to mind the gap between shows for too long.

That exhibition opens at Hawick Museum, in Wilton Lodge Park, on Sunday, September 2, and runs until the end of October.
