Switched on Sunday sees Innerleithen light up for Christmas

Community groups, businesses and townsfolk turned out in their droves at the weekend for Innerleithen’s Switched on Sunday event.

An afternoon of entertainment was put on by the shops and groups of the town before guest of honour Santa Claus led a parade through town and aided dux boy and girl Aaron Glendinning and Grace Turnbull, and lantern bearer Struan Coltman in turning on the festive lights.

Coordinator Karen Wilson said: “We had loads going on with more events than last year and lots of businesses open especially to offer discounts, refreshments and activities throughout the afternoon.

“There was lots of reasons for people to come out and support local firms, and there was a great buzz about the town.

“Innerleithen Civic Association do a fantastic job organising and fundraising for the light every year and this event is also about rewarding their hard work and making sure lots of people turn out to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

“About 30-odd shops opened especially for the event and the vast majority put something special on for locals to enjoy.

“It paid off with a huge crowd about three or four deep along the street for the big parade.”
Switched on Sunday has been taking place in the town in various guises since around 2009.
