Pupils at Newtown Primary School have designed posters asking people to bag and bin dog poo, which is often found in the school grounds.

They also plan to put poo bag dispensers around Newtown.

With dog mess repeatedly being walked into their classrooms, the pupils have had enough.

They said: “We are fed up of people bringing dogs into our playground and not picking up after them.

“If you are planning to walk in our school grounds please remember to bring dog poo bags.

“When you don’t pick up after your dog, children stand in it and it gets brought into our school. It spreads germs and is really disgusting.

“If you own a dog it is your responsibility to pick up after it.”

A spokesperson for Scottish Borders Council said: “Dog owners across the Scottish Borders are asked to play their part and pick up after their pets to ensure our area remains an attractive place to live, work and visit.

“The Community Action Teams can issue a fixed penalty notice to dog owners. The person reporting the incident must be able to provide a statement about witnessing the failure by a dog owner to immediately pick up after their dog, and can identify the owner.”
