Kelso’s post office is first class

Kelso’s post office and newsagent staff have been going above and beyond the call of duty throughout lockdown, and they’ve been roundly applauded by the postmistress.

The staff at Brown Newsagents in the town’s Woodmarket have been opening up at 6am through to late afternoon every day since lockdown began on March 23 to deal with the community’s needs.

And it’s won them a trophy for best customer service from the post office.

Postmistress Karen Armstrong told us: “I’m so happy with how my staff have stepped up to the plate during this pandemic, and I would like to thank them all so much for keeping the community of Kelso going.

“We’ve provided full personal and business banking services in the post office, and, of course, ensured customers are able to post goods, presents and essentials, to their families and loved ones.

“And for the past 15 weeks, we added more than 200 deliveries of newspapers to our 16 paperboys and girls, which helped the community to stay indoors and stay safe.”

Not only that, the team decided to dress up every day for a week to raise money for the Covid ward at the Borders General Hospital, raising more than £2,500 in the process.”

It’s through this that the small team of seven staff, which includes four after-school workers, was nominated for a customer service “Local Hero” award.

After they won the trophy, Borders MP John Lamont wrote to them saying: “I was pleased to hear that your efforts to raise money for the local hospital by putting on a raffle (and dressing up in fancy dress for a whole week to promote it) were recognised.

“Congratulations and many thanks to you and your team for your hard work and contribution during this pandemic.”
