Huge hole appears in A68 near Fala

Tuesday night’s thunderstorms were a great spectacle to some, but the rains which accompanied them have left a massive hole in the A68.

The road collapse, near the village of Fala, 15 miles south of the capital, has closed the road while engineers work to make it safe, and a diversion is in place, via Fala Dam.

It’s a busy section of the route, used by many Borders drivers making their way to and from Edinburgh.

No-one is thought to have been involved in the incident.

Drivers should be aware that journey times will be increased while the closure is in place.

Amey South East, which maintains trunk roads in the region, said that an investigation was under way into “the full extent of the damage.”

Amey added that maintenance crews were already working to repair the roadway, but warned that “clearly it will take some time”.

There were more thundery showers expected last night in the Borders, with the Met Office issuing a yellow warning, but these are expected to clear up by the weekend, which is expected to be fairly pleasant, if cloudy.
