"Huge blow" for Kelso

Thursday’s announcement of 60 redundancies by Kelso manufacturer Plexus has been described as a huge blow to the town.

The company, which only last year had its staff working 12-hour shifts, making ventilators for the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic, said that it intends to reduce headcount at the factory.

Ronnie Darroch, Plexus regional president in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said: “We remain committed to our long-term presence in Scotland and we take this measure reluctantly as it will affect our loyal and hardworking team members.

"Unfortunately, delays in new program ramps have meant it is necessary to reduce our workforce at this time to match the current level of demand.”

A spokesperson for the company said: “Plexus will actively support affected staff with re-employment opportunities (help with CVs, interviewing, job placement facilitation workshops, swift references and briefs to recruitment agencies). The 30-day consultation process will begin on February 26.”

The three town councillors have expressed their sorrow over the redundancies.

Tom Weatherston said: “This news is a huge blow to Kelso. Plexus is the major employer in the town and has been a valued company at Pinnaclehill for many years.

“I hope very much the company’s orders recover soon and I hope the people affected by this news can find other employment.

“It’s not easy just now and this could not have happened at a worse time for the staff, many who have worked for the company for many years.”

Simon Mountford added: “This is very sad news for those who are being made redundant.

"However, the council and South of Scotland Enterprise are in touch with the company to see what can be done to help.”

And Euan Robson added: “I am very sorry for those affected but am assured that the enterprise agency and council will do all they can to help.”

Borders MP John Lamont praised the factory for its contribution to the Covid effort, and added: “This comes as very concerning news for the town with approximately 60 jobs at risk.

“I will be contacting management, as well as the council and SoSE to ensure support is in place.”
