Charity shops put safety first as they reopen

Hawick’s Oxfam shop in the High Street opens today as part of the Scottish Government’s route out of lockdowm.

The shop’s Nikki Russell said donations are welcome, but there is limited space as donations have to be quarantined for 72 hours.

She said: “To allow everyone a chance we will only accept two black bags or two sealed boxes per donation per day, so it’s best to phone ahead on 01450 378538 and book your slot.

“We hope that you understand our position at this time and will work with us, this will allow the shop to stay open and everyone to work safely.

“Please also note we are unable to accept children’s toys at the moment ... hopefully that will change soon.”

There are new rules in place for customers, too, with both staff and volunteers wearing PPE, and customers are required to wear facemasks unless you have an underlying condition.

Social distancing is in place, with only three customers allowed in the shop at one time, and customers are asked to touch items as little as possible.

The shop will take cash payments, but contactless payment is preferred.

Nikki added: “We ask that you bring your own carrier bags as we only have cotton bags for sale in the shop.

“Most of all we are really looking forward to welcoming you back.

“We can’t wait to see all our lovely regulars and hopefully some new faces.”
