Borders’ mystery Silhouettes Man appeals from shadows for charity support

The mystery pair behind a host of silhouette statues, appearing daily and anonymously across West Linton, are hoping the installations will help them to raise money for a Borders mental health charity.

Going under the guise of simply Silhouettes Man, the unknown artists have been bringing joy and surprise to villagers during lockdown, erecting dozens of cutout figures across the village.

For the past week the two men have snuck out nightly to install silhouettes of Gruffalo book-inspired artworks, How to Train Your Dragon film characters, sheep and animals, and most recently Whipman week-themed artworks.

“The village looks like some kind of silhouette theme park,” one of the mystery makers told us.

“It’s pretty rewarding when you see people going around and enjoying them. It’s been something I’ve thought about doing for years. When I walk around the village I look around and create and imagine people doing funny things. I’ve a childish imagination.”

The silhouettes are also helping mark the would-be Whipman week celebrations.

“We’re trying to put them up as the ghosts of the events that should be going on,” Silhouettes Man added. “From the piper at the church, the wheelbarrow race installation, and the bike ride cyclists to the horse crossing the water, giraffes where the marquee should be and the junior football tournament.

“This has been a small team effort which with relatively little work has created a massive ripple effect of smiles, mystery and interest in the centre of our beautiful village, helping particularly young people through these tough and challenging times.”

With those mental health concerns in mind, the Silhouettes Man are hoping those who enjoy seeing the figures appearing each night will support their chosen charity Tiny Changes in memory of Scott Hutchison.

The lead singer of Frightened Rabbit, from Selkirk, died by suicide in May 2018.

“Scott was a friend of ours, as are his brother and sister-in-law who live in the village,” Silhouettes Man added. “We have strong ties to Scott.
