Peebles 3G pitch decision expected in March

Planners are expected to decide in March whether a synthetic surface pitch on part of a Peebles park.

Controversy has raged for several months with the Civic Trust, community council and residents lodging objections to the installation of the 3G pitch at Victoria Park .

Crick Carleton, the community council’s planning chairman, said: “We have 450 elements of correspondence on this issue. It’s stimulated a lot of interest both for and against.

“It’s a tough one for the planning officers to draw together.”

Robin Tatler, the community council chairman, urged all the councillors representing Peebles to go along to the meeting when the issue is discussed.

But Tweeddale West councillor Willie Archibald said: “Irrespective of what happens at council this also has to go before the Common Good working group.”

Scottish Borders Council studies have shown that Victoria Park is the most suitable location for the 3G pitch in Peebles.

But opponents insist it is not the right site, arguing that a third of the green space will become inaccessible to the general public.
