Merlin launches trio of clubs in Melrose

MELROSE’s Merlin Music Academy has a trio of clubs to allow Borderers to improve their traditional playing.

For primary school children, Saturday morning classes have already begun for fiddle, accordion, guitar or harp, with only a basic command of the chosen instrument needed.

The next date of the club is February 16, followed by March 2 and 16.

Merlin Music have also got a teenage trad band for primary seven to sixth-year children.

A spokesperson said: “This is a great opportunity for young people to experience playing music together and developing new arrangements.

“We will run this for a trial period with a view to creating a regular weekly workshop based on traditional repertoire.”

Students need to be able to play simple reels up to speed. The band started last night (Wednesday), but anyone interested can contact Merlin for more information.

And finally an adult music club has been introduced, meeting on the last Thursday of each month.
